Dirty jewellery - Auckland evolu Good Things

Not all dirt is cheap. Wellington jewellery designer Simon Edmonds designs precious pieces of jewellery that mix up expensive chunks of gold with, well, mucky old dirt. The result? Bits of bling that challenge our pre-conceptions of commodity. His thought provoking and pretty pieces are on display until December 9th as part of the exhibition Material Concerns at the Corbans Estate Arts Centre in West Auckland.

Kitchen and Bathroom handles need no longer be chosen purely for durabilty. The latest designs combine the best of form and function; they are architectural scuptures that make an impact on their own. From Simon Edmonds design, a matching set of coffee mug hooks (or they could be used as coat or towel hooks); Reptile, Koru and Jester are available in polished or brushed pewter.

At last you can throw your kitsch in the sink, thanks to a new breed of Kiwi designers…There's a generation of funky New Zealand designers finding cool ways to infuse our heritage into new products…This year could be comeback time for the [paua] shell. Look hard enough and you'll find the cool among the tack. Texan Art Schools, in Garden Place, has a range of paua jewellery made in Takaka and Christchurch. Noteable mention goes to the shop's pewter Eel Salad servers inlaid with paua, from Owairaka based Simon Edmonds of Deligion Design.

Work has also been showcased in the Herald on Sunday (“Handle with care,” April 2007), The Dominion Post (December 2003), Architecture New Zealand (March/April 2005), Interior Details (“Gripping Stuff,” March/April 2001) and City Weekend, Waikato (April 2001).
